Boldo – All Purpose Elixir

Boldo is an aromatic tree (peumus boldus) native to the Andes. Its leaves which contain the alkaloid boldine are used in cooking and as an all purpose herbal medicine.

Boldo or boldina leaf is a member of the family monimiaceae. It has been used in Chile and Argentina extensively in cooking vegetables and meat dishes. Rich in antioxidants, this plant is also an antiseptic, diuretic, anti-fungal, and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

In herbal medicine the leaves are used for stomach problems, to cure common colds, gallbladder and liver problems. The oil in the leaves is believed to stimulate the gallbladder to produce bile. Which is why it could easily accompany and enhance a detox plan diet especially when detoxing liver.

Boldo leaves benefits

For best results, its leaves should be crushed, prepared and consumed as a tea. However, dry leaves are also effective as well as supplements made from the leaves. This plant is good for:

Word of caution: Some boldo supplements contain a liver toxin which can damage the liver. It is good to ask your doctor if your can use boldo especially if you have gallstones.
